For those of you in rural America, you know that the easiest way to listen to your favorite bands is the old-fashioned way. Rather wait for hours to download a few songs or sit through a laggy stream as it continues to buffer over and over, you can head down to your local music store in a fraction of the time. While there is something to be said for actually physically owning an album, there's no doubt that this is both the less economical and less ecological option. Fortunately, where cable and DSL have previously overlooked you, satellite internet will not let you down.
Â
Providing similar speeds as DSL and cable and at a comparable price, satellite broadband gives rural America a free pass into the musical wonderland that is high speed internet. For starters, there's the ability to quickly download music one song at a time from iTunes, saving you both time and money.
After previewing a few songs from an album, you may decide you want the whole thing anyway and even this can be downloaded faster than the time it takes to get to the mall. Also, it saves on the gas you would use and the materials wasted to manufacture the CD and packaging.Â
There are also tons of free music options available on the web. If it's music videos you're in the market for, you can find virtually any song you're looking for on YouTube. You can also listen to pre-created video play lists, perfect for any party. Unfortunately, due to recent copyright laws, many original versions of songs have been removed from the site, so you may consider some of these other sites for your free music.
Â
Grooveshark is one of the best online music players to date.
Not only does it give you access to almost every artist and song known to man, but you can actually add them to your library without downloading them. This means that all of your favorites are stored to you as if you own them without any cost to you. Simply log on and they're all there waiting for you. It's also a great opportunity for exploring new music in that you have nothing to lose. If you don't like it, just don't add it to your library, no costs incurred.Â
Pandora is another free option for broadening your musical horizons. The site is unique that that it delivers bands to you that you may not have otherwise known existed. Once you create a free account, you get the option to create your own "stations" based on one or more artists. For example, if you type in "The Kinks," Pandora will create a tab on your sidebar called "The Kinks Radio" which will play artists like The Velvet Underground and David Bowie, along with songs by The Kinks as well as some others you may have never heard before.
Â
As much as you may have been an advocate for going out to a record store to buy CDs to add to your collection, there's no denying that these online options are not to be missed. At the very least, satellite internet can help you explore albums and bands you have never heard before, ensuring that you know whether or not they're worth actually owning.
