What you see â" âDining with the stars' is how Pergola the rooftop restaurant at the Hotel Accord Metropolitan, Chennai is described. Since its opening in August 2007, Pergola has become highly popular in the high altitude dining category with a total of 119 covers and is still expanding.
At the restaurant, you have a choice between dining indoors or outdoors. The view of the starry lit sky, twinkling city lights and cool breeze is what hits you when you walk in. The décor is elegant with popular country music playing at a comfortable volume. The restaurant manager, Syed, gives us a warm welcome and ensures that we are seated comfortably. We are placed in the care of the friendly steward, Periasamy who turns out to be quite knowledgeable regarding each dish on the menu.
What you get â" Pergola is a multi-cuisine restaurant but primarily serves Grills, South and North Indian food.
You can start off by choosing from a wide range of cocktails accompanied by some great entrees. The restaurant has a bar counter too. We go with the dishes that are house specials. Our entrées were Murgh Scarmoza Tikka (Scarmoza is Italian cheese), Tandoor non-veg platter and the Sengdana Broccoli (marinated in curd, coated with roasted peanuts). The smokiness of the dishes was outstanding! Next came in the main course â" Grilled Norwegian Pink Salmon with balsamic reduction (slow cooking of balsamic vinegar), country potatoes and boiled vegetables. The fish was well marinated but tasted bland. Apt for the western palate. Next in line was the Coorg Erachi Curry (made with South Indian spices â" roasted and ground) and Kalan Pattani Thengai Pal Curry which were relished with paper thin appams. Reminds you of grandma's recipes!
Last but not the least was the extraordinary dessert, Goan Bibinca with vanilla ice cream. This is a Goan pudding with 16 layers and each layer gets cooked only when the one below it is. A classic favorite and thoroughly enjoyed.
Other dishes that you could try at Pergola include Kori Gassi (Mangalore chicken curry) and Mahi Mussallam (fish flavored with cashew / fenugreek) with accompaniments such as kal dosa, rice and parathas. There is a handpicked selection of grills with different marinades available in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Local favorites such as Bisibele bhath and varieties of rice such as lime, tamarind, tomato are popular. The green pea mint soup with cappuccino is a must.
Soups are priced from Rs. 195 onwards, while the grills range from Rs. 550 to Rs. 1,400. The main course dishes start from Rs. 450 to Rs. 1,500. The desserts and other non alcoholic beverages range from Rs. 95 to Rs. 150.
Our verdict â" If you are looking for a romantic setting then Pergola is the place. It is also a great option if you need to entertain business counterparts, clients etc. The food is excellent. Even though it is high priced, the portion size justifies it. Valet parking is available of course, with it being in a 5 star hotel. It is advisable to make a reservation on weekends. The staff is friendly though they do tend to get busy during peak timings. The ambience is memorable.
What you pay for a meal for two â" Rs. 2,000 More High Altitude Dining At Pergola Issues
